The Vanishing Hitchhiker
Rick was traveling down a deserted road on a particularly cold night one winter when he spotted an attractive young woman on the side of the road. She didn't wave at him, she wasn't holding out her hand, but it was so cold that he decided to stop and make sure that she was alright. As soon as he stopped the young woman got into the car. Rick asked if she was alright, if she'd had car trouble and if he could take her home. The young woman gave him her address, but didn't answer any of his other questions.
As they drove Rick tried to make conversation, but the only time the young woman spoke was to give him directions to her house. Rick pulled into her driveway and parked, he turned to the girl to say something, but she had vanished. He hadn't heard the door open, or close, and could no longer see the girl. Curious, he went to the front door and rang the door bell. When an elderly man opened the door Rick explained that he had picked up a girl on the side of the road, that she had gave him this address and that when he pulled into the driveway she vanished. Laughing he told the old man that she must have gotten out of the car very quietly and walked into the house. He continued to explain that she had acted a bit strangely and that he just wanted to make sure that she was okay.
The old man invited Rick inside and directed him towards the fireplace. On the mantel sat a picture that the old man pointed out to Rick, "Is this the girl you gave a ride, son?" he asked. Rick said that it was. "Yeah, that's my daughter, son. And, as for her being okay, well, she died not too long ago in an accident out on the road where you picked her up."
